[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]STRIDES for Family Health was funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and led by Management Sciences for Health (MSH), which partnered with the Communication for Development Foundation Uganda (CDFU), Jhpiego, and Meridian Group International. STRIDES began working in 2009 to reduce fertility, morbidity, and mortality rates among Ugandan women and their families. By expanding access, improving quality, increasing demand, and promoting integration of health services at the facility and community level in the public and private sector, STRIDES made a number of notable achievements in its six years of operation in 15 districts of Uganda. The project served 15 percent of Uganda’s population, or about 5.4 million people, 1 million of whom were children under the age of five.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”8549″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”right” style=”vc_box_rounded” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”8547″ img_size=”full” style=”vc_box_rounded”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]St. John’s Hospital in Kyenjojo district, received a PBC to mobilize mothers to access free ANC and comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care services through a voucher scheme. “We learned a lot about how to engage the community in health service delivery,” said Dr. David Mwinganiza, St. John’s Hospital director. “The program was community-based and the community embraced it. And we learned a lot how, as a facility, to improve our skills and capacity to handle any sort of services.”

Pregnant women were encouraged to complete the standard four ANC consultations, as recommended by the World Health Organization, to be eligible to receive the other free health services. Mothers who completed the fourth visit received a green voucher that entitled them to access free services, such as ultrasound scanning, cesarean sections, lab tests, postnatal care, and postabortion care. This significantly increased the number of women who accessed these services. Before the voucher program started in 2012, the number of pregnant women attending their fourth ANC consultation in the district was 34 percent, Dr. Mwinganiza said. That figure rose to 61 percent by June 2013.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Project C.U.R.E.’s mission to identify, solicit, collect, sort and distribute donated medical supplies and services is felt around the globe every day. Through their programs, people living on less than a dollar a day have common first aid items, have access to medical equipment and supplies in their communities, and have hope for many more tomorrows.

Project C.U.R.E.’s Cargo program delivers donated medical supplies and equipment to under-resourced hospitals, clinics, and community health centers in developing countries. The primary method of delivery is semi-truck sized 40-foot ocean-freight cargo containers. C.U.R.E. Cargo donations can also be delivered by air freight or 20-foot ocean-freight cargo containers. For requests smaller than an ocean freight container, Project C.U.R.E. offers an alternative of C.U.R.E. Kits.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”8544″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Donated medical supplies and equipment are critical components of these life-saving shipments. These items are used by St. John’s Hospital to provide high quality healthcare and empower the community we serve. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The death of a woman from complications during pregnancy or childbirth continues to be a serious global health challenge and a sentinel indicator of how well a health system is functioning. Saving Mothers, Giving Life is an ambitious five-year public-private partnership to rapidly reduce maternal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, where many of these deaths occur. As this report indicates, an intensive effort to strengthen health services in countries facing high levels of maternal mortality and HIV can produce impressive results in saving women’s lives.

Beginning in four districts each in Uganda and Zambia, Saving Mothers successfully built upon existing maternal and child health programs, as well as HIV programs supported by PEPFAR, and integrated these services during its 12-month proof-of-concept phase. In close alignment with both governments’ national health plans, Saving Mothers has put in place life-saving interventions that are making high quality, safe childbirth services available and accessible to women and their newborns.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”8533″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Saving Mothers addressed the shortage of health workers by hiring doctors and midwives to accelerate access to services. Uganda’s Ministry of Health incorporated many of these newly hired health staff as regular personnel with the adoption of a wage bill that improved salary and living conditions. This, combined with significant health facility investments, including renovating 11 facilities with operating theaters to perform Cesarean sections, delivered notable quality of care improvements.

St. John’s Hospital Kyenjojo (then called Midas Touch Medical Services) has a record of successfully implementing reproductive health projects. From 2011 to 2015 the hospital implemented a district wide maternal health project in Kyenjojo district under MSH/STRIDES-USAID –Saving Mothers Giving Life Project which increased Antenatal attendance from 33.6% to 77.2% and deliveries in health facilities from 19.6% to 51.2%. For this work the health facility was recognized by Ministry of Health, CDC and USAID and Dr. Mwinganiza was recognized as a Maternal Health Champion by USAID and Ministry of Health in 2014.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
